Lake Tahoe

I've spent far too long away from this blog, but that was the result when my days and evening are filled with so much to do and so little time. All this stress caught the better of me last week when I came down with the flu, my first case of it in years, which forced me to spend last weekend taking better care of myself. This entailed indulging in gorgeous and tasty cioppino and catching up on movies (more on both of those fronts later). It also gave me a chance to assemble some photos I took of a long weekend spent in beautiful Lake Tahoe.

Like the summer camping trip, I hadn't been to Tahoe since I was wee, but unlike the camping trip, I had none of the silly fear. I was especially looking forward to the cozy, comfy cabin and doing nothing more than lazing about watching movies, taking naps, or soaking in the hot tub. I was also looking forward to seeing snow. For a Bay Area girl like me, snow is a novelty, so I spent as much time outdoors clomping about in that magical white stuff.

The one activity to lure me out of the warm embrace of our mega awesome cabin was tubing at Northstar. While some friends took to snowboarding, tubing was definitely enough of a thrill for a scared-y cat like me.

After the fun on the slopes, we gathered at The Old Post Office cafe for lunch. I kept it light - nutella on slices of whole wheat bread and a strawberry, banana, and coconut smoothie - so I could save room for what would surely be an epic dinner.

After lunch we stopped by our cabin for some down time - a quick game, a change of clothes, or a mini-nap - before doing a little exploring around the lake.

While most of our day was relaxing, others spent the day snowboarding and working up a fierce appetite. Fortunately for all of us, hot pot was on the menu that night. Just like our summer camping trip, our hot pot dinner was the kind of communal experience that makes me fall in love with food culture. I love seeing the colors, shapes, textures of ingredients and how it all comes together (and brings a great group of people together). A lot of times for me, the mise en place is just as visually beguiling as the finished dish.

The next day was clear and crisp, and unfortunately time for us to head back home. I was a little bummed; I would have loved to have stayed at least 2 more days to enjoy the cabin's amenities and Lake Tahoe's beauty further. And I'm already looking forward to the next trip.
